What Does the Spam Score in Your TempJar Inbox Mean?

Short answer: the spam score is a warning label on a message you received — not a verdict on your inbox. Most of what you will find by searching "spam score" is written for people sending marketing email, about how to avoid the spam folder. That is not what you are looking at in TempJar. Here, each incoming message carries a score, and messages scoring over 50 get a Spam badge in the list. The score tells you how suspicious that one message looks, so you can treat it with the right amount of caution before you click anything in it.

A temp inbox receives mail from sites you do not fully trust yet: codes you asked for, marketing you did not, and occasional phishing dressed as a familiar brand. A visible score helps you tell those apart at a glance.

How to read the score

Think of the score as a scale from "looks ordinary" to "looks like spam". A low score means nothing in the message raised a flag: the sender, subject and content look like ordinary mail. A middling score means something is a little off — perhaps heavy marketing language, a mismatched sender, or formatting that resembles bulk mail — but it may still be the newsletter or trial email you actually requested. A score over 50 earns the Spam badge, which is TempJar's way of saying: slow down, this one looks like spam, do not trust its links or attachments on sight.

The score is a guide, not a guarantee in either direction. A genuine code from a small, badly configured sender can score higher than you expect, and a careful phishing email can score lower than it deserves. Use the score together with your own judgement: did you expect this message, from this sender, right now?

What to do with a high-score message

A Spam badge does not mean the message was blocked. TempJar shows you the message with its badge, so you can decide. A blocked message would hide the code you might actually need; a labelled one lets you judge for yourself.

What the score does not mean

A high score on one message does not mean your inbox is compromised, your handle is "flagged", or future mail will be blocked. Each message is scored on its own. It also does not mean the sender knows anything about you beyond the temp address you gave them. And a low score is not a safety certificate: never send sensitive information to, or through, a temp inbox, and never use it for banking, password recovery for important accounts, or Discord, where a single missed or spoofed message can cost you an account.

Using the score as part of a spam habit

The score works best alongside the rest of TempJar's tools: search and label filters to find the message you actually want, blocking for repeat senders, and one inbox per purpose so a noisy trial never pollutes a newsletter inbox. When a trial inbox starts collecting Spam-badged mail, that is your signal to stop using that handle — you do not need to clean it up, unsubscribe, or explain yourself. Just walk away, which is the whole point of a disposable address.

What temp mail is NOT for

Do not use a temporary address for banking, government services, password recovery for important accounts, or Discord, or any account you cannot afford to lose. Some sites reject temporary addresses outright, and a lost temp inbox can mean a lost account. Temp mail is for low-stakes sign-ups, trials, newsletters and downloads, where spam is the real cost. If losing access would hurt, use your real email instead.

Frequently asked questions

What does a spam score over 50 mean in TempJar?

The message looks like spam and gets a Spam badge in the list. Treat its links and attachments as untrusted, and only copy a code from it if you were expecting that message.

Does a high score block the message?

No. TempJar shows the message with its badge so you can decide, rather than hiding a code you might need.

Can a genuine message have a high score?

Yes. A small or badly configured sender can score higher than expected, so check whether you expected the message and whether the sender matches.

Does a low score mean a message is safe?

No. A low score means nothing raised a flag, not that the message is verified. Never enter passwords or payment details through a link in a temp inbox message.
